Learning how to Weld

When was the last time you used a gardening tool or hook to hang stuff? Chances are you probably use at least one of these two items on a regular basis and never really stopped and realize how handy these two things are. Just like anything else someone has to make these products and then sell them. Right now i am working at a place called SEEDS for Autism and just recently started learning how to weld these items and would like to explain a little bit of things we have to learn in order to make these common everyday items.

Before you get started it’s important to make sure you are wearing the proper safety gear like goggles and gloves. It’s also important to know how to use the different tools properly to ensure proper safety for yourself and the people you work with. Some people find all of these safety precautions to be a bit overwhelming but taking all of these measures is quintessential to  welding and since the forge is several thousand degrees hot getting burned can cause serious injury and harm to the part of the body that gets burned. Remember the number one rule in welding, just like other trades, is safety first.

Once you’ve followed the proper safety standards the real fun begins. The different steps that need to be followed start with marking the pieces of metal so that you know where to cut and as you do that someone else will get the forge started and heated up so that you can place the metal in once you’ve finished marking and cutting the metal accordingly. Finally after heating up the metal you can begin forging the metal. When forging there are  many different tools that you can use in order to make specific designs like heart shaped hooks, gardening tools and stakes. I just started learning how to make stuff in welding so these are just some of the basic designs but i am having a good time so that’s important when you’re trying new things. If you have fun trying new things then you’ll be able to expand your horizons by trying more and more new things which is good because it will help you make the most of your life.

I’m not usually the person who likes change or trying new things but going to  SEEDS has helped me get introduced to all sorts of cool stuff like welding. So if you’re trying to figure out what you want to do with your life come check out SEEDS for Autism and you will have the chance to learn how to weld and do a variety of  other activities like sowing, ceramics, wood and other fun stuff. One of my favorites is welding and you might like it too.

This article was so well written it brought back happy memories of welding in high school 30 years ago. I wish I could weld again, I would love to make heart shaped hooks. I wish SEEDS was in Western Australia.
